Turn Off Unneeded Lights – Air Conditioning Appreciation Days
Turn off the lights when you are not using them. When you leave a room, turn the lights off. If the room has enough daylight, turn the lights off.
While this may be a classic energy saving tip, sometimes we forget. Lights use electricity, and when we are already seeing a spike in our bill from running our air conditioner to stay cool, there is no need to pile on for unneeded electricity.
Speaking of our AC systems, we want to reduce the amount of heat that we are introducing into our buildings and homes to reduce the cooling load needed. Leaving lights and electronics running can generate unneeded heat.
Besides turning off unnecessary lights, consider replacing light bulbs with more efficient ones. Only 10% of the energy incandescent bulbs use is given off as light, the rest is heat. That is a lot of unnecessary heat being introduced into the atmosphere that we are trying to cool, not to mention a waste of energy. Consider replacing those bulbs with Energy Star light bulbs which not only produce 75% less heat but also use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs.
